Japanese Encephalitis is a disease that can lead to severe brain infection or even death. It comes from exposure to mosquito bites. As the name suggests, this disease is commonly found in Asia with the risk being greater in rural areas.

There are limited treatment options and it is estimated that a third of all those infected will eventually die from the disease.

Symptoms of Japanese Encephalitis

Symptoms appear as common flu to start:

  • High temperature
  • Seizures
  • Stiff neck
  • Inability to communicate
  • Tremors in multiple parts of the body
  • Muscle weakness and spasms
  • Paralysis
  • Death

Prevention

JE (Japanese Encephalitis) is caught by mosquito bites and there are many ways to help protect you and your family whilst travelling including:

  • Having the vaccination
  • Wearing long sleeved clothing
  • Using products containing DEET.
